Goodbye at Home
Hospice Care and Quality of Life Assessment
Determining quality of life is one of the hardest parts about having a senior pet, and making the decision to let them go is very difficult. As a pet owner, you want your pet to have the longest and best quality life possible, and you don’t want them to suffer. Pets often hide their suffering or present complex signs, making it hard for pet owners to make that decision. Having an experienced opinion from someone on the outside can be of great benefit. Dr. Montgomery will never tell you what to do, but she will offer her professional opinion for you to consider. Dr. Montgomery will also give you options as to what treatment, if any, would be helpful for your pet so you can make an informed decision.
If you schedule an appointment with Dr. Montgomery, be sure to tell her if you are wanting a quality of life assessment and/or hospice care versus euthanasia so she can be prepared with the appropriate equipment, and can block off enough time to spend with you.
Dr. Montgomery also has a thermal imaging system to show areas of heat and cold in your pet’s body.
Thermal imaging is very useful to help find areas that may be inflamed (hotter than expected) or lacking blood flow from chronic illness or injury (cooler than expected). These findings, along with history and physical assessment, can help you make decisions for your pet and help Dr. Montgomery target treatment to affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive process, where Dr. Montgomery simply takes pictures of your pet which are then transposed into a heat map of their body.
